Rambling On Nazaré

Rambling on Nazaré is one of the first videos I ever made. A big day with huge waves from the mythic Nazaré, Portugal. I was so stoked that it got published by surf-related websites like Surftotal, Onfire Surf, and many others. The video got 12k views in a few days.

Nazaré big waves – Rambling on Nazaré

With a nostalgic feeling behind it, I like to remember that day. It was epic as only Nazaré can be! These big waves were just starting to get discovered and explored by big wave riders like Garret McNamara. I also had the chance to meet some of them in person, and had some of my photos published by 4surf Italian Magazine.

A Front-Row Seat to Nature’s Spectacle

Nazaré, a quaint fishing village nestled along Portugal’s western coast, has gained worldwide recognition for its colossal waves. Known as “Praia do Norte,” this iconic beach is a mecca for surfers and spectators alike, offering an unparalleled opportunity to witness the raw power of the ocean.

The Nazaré Canyon, a deep underwater gorge, is the driving force behind these massive waves.

As swells from the Atlantic Ocean approach the canyon, they are amplified and accelerated, creating waves that can reach towering heights of over 100 feet. The sheer scale of these waves is both awe-inspiring and intimidating.

Watching these giant waves from the shore is an unforgettable experience. The roar of the ocean as the waves crash against the cliffs is deafening, and the spray that they generate can be felt hundreds of yards away. The sight of surfers riding these monstrous waves is nothing short of breathtaking. It’s a testament to the courage, skill, and dedication of these athletes who push the boundaries of human possibility.

For photographers, Nazaré offers a unique opportunity to capture the raw power and beauty of nature.

The dramatic contrast between the dark, stormy sky and the white, frothing waves creates stunning visual compositions. The sheer scale of the waves makes it easy to capture iconic images that will be remembered for years to come.

Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or simply a spectator, a visit to Nazaré is a must-do for anyone who appreciates the power and beauty of the natural world. The opportunity to witness the incredible spectacle of these giant waves is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you in awe.

The best time to witness the big waves in Nazaré is typically between October and March.
